This Orange Flower Water is a pure distillation made using the flowers of the bitter orange tree. Floral waters have traditionally been used in many French and especially Middle Eastern dessert dishes. Orange flower water, also known as orange blossom water, has become popular in Western cuisine as a flavoring in baked goods, confections, and beverages. Famously used to add delicate citrus notes in traditional French madeleine cookies, in Mexico this versatile ingredient is a popular addition to wedding cakes. In the Middle East orange blossom water is used to flavor baklava.
Orange blossom water is used to flavor baked goods, drinks, salads and desserts around the world. Early on people discovered that bitter orange flower blossoms when distilled would produce a liquid that can be enjoyed as is, or used in an abundance of desserts. In the United States this ingredient was popular in the Ramos Gin Fizz, a cooling cocktail enjoying a renaissance in popularity. In Morocco, a salad of grated carrots is moistened with olive oil and lemon juice, and then liberally doused with orange blossom water. It is finished off with toasted pine nuts and decorated with orange segments.
