What is Propylene Glycol in Foods?

Propylene glycol is a synthetic additive commonly used as a solvent in food colors and flavors. This clear, colorless liquid adds a slight hint of sweetness, in addition to serving as a base for extracted flavors. The water soluble liquid can be used alone as a carrier, or in conjunction with other base liquids such as alcohol or glycerine. Food-safe propylene glycol is classified as "generally recognized as safe" by the FDA, and is a completely different ingredient than the PG used for industrial non-food applications.
