Frantoio Polizzi Michela

Fruitier Olive Oil from Sicily

You'll be really amazed if you know that Greeks sowed the seed for Sicilian olive production. Greek colonists in Sicily planted the olive trees during 5th century B.C. and...because of the perfect Mediterranean climate and fertile volcanic soil, olive trees in Sicily grew extra ordinarily well. At present, Sicily accounts for nearly 10% of total Italian olive production.

Sicily, the Mediterranean's largest island

Map of Sicily in Italy
It’s the diverse Sicilian farmers who deserve the credit for making this the third most productive olive oil region in Italy, accounting for nearly 10% of total Italian production. With its perfect Mediterranean climate and fertile volcanic soil, thousands of acres of Sicilian soil are dedicated to olive groves. The groves set at higher altitudes are less subject to scorching summer temperature, providing ideal conditions for the production of these light and elegant oils. Many are sweet and delicate. Others can be as strong and peppery as their Tuscan cousins to the north. All are fragrant and appetizing…so much so that it has been said that the ancient Athenians preferred Sicilian olive oil to their own, even though some of the varieties grown in Sicily and Greece were the same! The olives are harvested earlier here, usually in October. And Sicilian trees are generally shorter with somewhat dense foliage, making it easier to pick the delicate fruit by hand.

The ingenuity of Sicilian cooks result in highly individual interpretations of its multi-cultural cuisine. You’ll find fresh tuna sizzling in skillets of olive oil, zucchini flowers deep frying in it, bean paste with fennel drizzled with olive oil, orange salads dressed with oil and, of course, all kinds of pasta lovingly tossed in olive oil.

We offer three carefully selected varieties from two producers (one an organic farmer) who proudly represent this unique region, Sicily.
