Za'atar is the base for great Middle Eastern spice combinations. It is mixed with other ingredients such as sesame seeds and sumac. In many Middle Eastern countries the za'atar combinations are mixed with olive oil for a spread which can be spread on a dough base and baked as a bread. In many places a soft bread is sold by vendors with the za'atar combination to be dipped into the bread. It can also be used as a seasoning for meats and vegetables. Try it sprinkled on hummus. If you have enjoyed labneh which is a yogurt drained to make a tangy cream cheese, sprinkle some za'atar on the top. Tradition also has it that za'atar makes the mind alert and the body strong.
