What are Organic Spelt Berries?
Spelt is an ancient grain that’s in the wheat family. Today’s spelt is much like the spelt from thousands of years ago because it hasn’t gone through hybridization.
What does Organic Spelt taste like?
Organic spelt tastes nutty and sweet. Similar to wheat berries or barley, spelt berries have a firm and chewy texture when cooked. Some consider spelt to be easier to digest than wheat.
How to Cook Organic Spelt:
For quicker cooking, soak organic spelt berries overnight. Rinse them in a colander after soaking. To cook: place 1 cup of organic spelt in a pan and add 2.5 cups of water. Bring to a boil, and then simmer over low heat for 50 minutes. If you’re using spelt that hasn’t been soaked overnight, rinse before use. Follow the previous instructions and increase the simmer time to 90 minutes. One cup of dry organic spelt berries makes 2 cups cooked.
Is Organic Spelt Good for You?
Organic spelt is a great source of protein and fiber. One cooked serving of spelt has a bit more than 10 grams of protein and 7.5 grams of fiber. That’s 30 percent of the average adult’s daily fiber requirement. Organic spelt is also a good source of B vitamins, iron, and zinc.
