What do Rye Berries taste like?
Rye berries are similar in texture to wheat berries. When cooked, they are firm and chewy and have a subtle walnut taste.
How to Cook Rye Berries:
The following are basic cooking instructions. Place 1 cup of rye berries in a colander and rinse well with cool water. Bring 3 cups of water to a boil and add the rye berries. Return to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 1 hour. Remove from heat and let stand for 10 minutes. Season the cooked rye berries as you wish. Note that salt should not be added to the cooking water. One cup of dry rye berries yields 2 cups cooked.
Are Rye Berries Good for You?
Rye is a good source of protein and fiber. One serving (1/3 cup dry) of rye berries has more than 5 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber. That’s 12 percent of the average adult’s daily protein requirement and 34 percent of her daily fiber need. Also high in B vitamins, amino acids, phosphorus, copper, selenium, and magnesium, rye is considered a healthy grain.
