Barley Pearled Pearled Barley has a sweet, nutty flavor and soft chewy texture its a wonderful addition to soups, stews, pilafs, casseroles and stuffings. Makes a delicious breakfast porridge sprinkled with nuts and raisins. Or try saut©ing wild mushrooms, onions and garlic, then adding pearled barley to toast, add stock and white or red wine and voila! Barley Risotto! Directions: Rinse well, add 1 cup of barley to 2 1/2 cups of boiling water. Simmer covered 35-40 minutes until liquid is absorbed. For a fluffier grain, soak Barley in water for 5 hours then simmer covered for 15 minutes. One cup dry yields 3-1/2 to 4 cups cooked. Barley (Hordeum Vulgare) is one of the oldest of the domesticated crops. "Pearled" means that the bran and hull have been removed, leaving only a small white pearl of endosperm. CONTAINS GLUTEN.
