Sea Salt vs. Table Salt

What is the difference between sea salt and table salt?

Professional chefs will often choose sea salt over “table” salt for its flavor and texture, and sea salt is available in many varieties. While sea salt is unrefined, some products in grocery stores could actually contain refined, iodized salt and be labeled “sea salt” because of the salt’s origin (the sea). Unrefined sea salt contains very little iodine, an additive in table salt and a necessary mineral for thyroid function. Unrefined sea salt contains important minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and since today’s diets provide plenty of other sources of iodine, using unrefined sea salt in cooking can be a flavorful choice.

Some think sea salt is a healthier choice for its flavor – since it has more flavor, you may use less. It’s made from evaporated sea water, where table salt is mined, purified, recrystallized, evaporated, and iodized, along with having anti-caking agents added. While the additives in table salt have not shown to be harmful to health, sea salt is a great choice if you prefer fewer additives in your diet.
