The above inscription was engraved around 130 A.D. on the forum pavement of the ancient Roman city of Thamugadi . Those early Latin words, along with their numerous and elaborate public baths, reflect the ancient Romans’ obsession with cleanliness. And while it is thought a Roman peasant woman was the first to discover the base formula for “modern soap,” bathing in olive oil was considered a sign of power and wealth. The Greeks also used the rich oil as a cleaning agent, rubbing it into the body and then scraping it (and the dirt) off with a “strigil,” a sickle-like instrument.
